Well, congrats on the first tooth lost! It's pretty cool that you guys gave a good explanation about why it happens. In hindsight, that's a great way to prepare him for the growth of those permanent chompers.

And that toy seems like a nice idea too. Perhaps you can use more toys from the Thomas and Friends series for the other teeth that would fall out.

You know what might work? A netbook or a computer with speakers situated up high. The speakers can be controlled through the computer and your son couldn't mess with the volume. Just a thought.

Well, that beats my "neighbor note" about the garden last summer. I do like the way they spelled "curdisy" though! :-P Are there any kids' radios that have a volume limiter on it? Or perhaps wireless remote speakers, so that the radio or whatever could be in your room, and the music would just be piped into his room, at the volume of YOUR choice? They could even be mounted high where he couldn't reach them to break them...??

I can remember when John was about to loose his first tooth. My wife and I have noticed some blood when we brushed his teeth. He was complaining about the pain, so we decided to look for Germantown TN dentists who can diagnose our child. We are so afraid that he might actually swallow his tooth, despite the idea of having a toy from a tooth fairy. Good thing, the dentist was so child friendly and he was able to get the baby tooth of my son.

Brian, my son also has PDD-NOS. I'm going to call the doctor to have the prescription written this way because it's not something that can just be requested. At first he did really well with the pills, until he started taking Melatonin pills and now he doesn't want to take any pills anymore. So, bedtime is rough. I got some liquid melatonin but in teeny tiny letters there's a warning not to give it to children under 12 because the second ingredient is alcohol. Sheesh. So, I have to return that and look for something else.

Hi Kristine,

My son was just diagnosed with a condition called PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder). Anyways, the doc prescribed Tenex. Since my son is only 3, I was in the same predicament as you; as far as the him taking the pill is concerned. I called around town and was able to find a pharmacy that could compound the pills into liquid form, now it's Tootie Frootie!! It costs $10 to have it made into syrup. From my understanding, this "compounding" is pretty common, so you might want to check around.
Oh... and the medication works great for Sam. He has shown signifigant improvement.

Sorry to hear that his progress wasn't what you had hoped, but I am really glad that you feel very comfortable and happy with the school plan for kindergarten - that is great that there is such a good solution for him that you are happy with!

My doctor wrote the prescription for Tenex in a liquid form. I had to go to a compound pharmacy to have it filled, since it had to be hand mixed. He's only been on it for a week so we are still figuring out if it works with his Adderall XR

Thanks so much for the support, Carla. As I'm sure you know, it can be very isolating to be a parent of a child with special needs, so it does feel like I'm the only one sometimes, even though I know I'm not.
Tammy, it's good to know that I'm not the only one. My son is in the Medicaid Waiver program which provides Medicaid to disabled children without regard for parental income. They offer respite, but it takes forever to actually get it. I put in an ad at a local university for a Mother's Helper, and have had a lovely college student watching the kids while I get some housework done for about a month now. I can only afford to have her for a couple of hours per week, but it's still an enormous help to my sanity. The next step is going out with her and the kids and me, and then babysitting...because I don't trust anyone either. So, we're taking it slow, and this way, I can show her how to handle behavioral situations that come up so she's not dealing with them all alone...then when she is alone, she'll know what to expect, and I'll know she'll know what to do.

I hope all goes well for you and your son tomorrow...

My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS when he was younger. Now that he's 10 yrs. old, doctors will not continue that diagnosis because he no longer displays enough of the symptoms. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about giving him the Tenex. I think it's any parent's absolute last resort to give daily medication but you must keep your son and your family safe. My son takes Clonidine (also a blood pressure medication and Risperdal) The Risperdal helps to control mood swings and lessens tantrums and such. The Clonidine helps with his hyperactivity and impulsiveness. He's much happier since he's been on the meds and even requests them at the appropriate times because he feels himself getting out of control. They've allowed him to fit in more at school and have helped him concentrate on learning instead of fighting behavior issues. I wish you all the best. I know it can feel like you're the only parent on the planet who is going through this.
